    Addiction Medicine Student Interest Group (AMSIG)

    Medical Specialty Interest Group (organization that aligns with a specific medical specialty)

    Mission: The purpose of this organization shall be to increase exposure to the subspecialty. The AMSIG aims to equip medical students with the knowledge needed to provide empathetic care to their patients affected by addiction regardless of the specialty they ultimately pursue. The AMSIG will also provide students with opportunities to learn about the impact of addiction through the eyes of real patients, providers and others working in the field.

    Mission: The American Medical Student Association (AMSA), with a half-century history of medical student activism, is the oldest and largest independent association of physicians-in-training in the United States. Today, AMSA is a student-governed, national organization committed to representing the concerns of physicians-in-training. AMSA members are medical students, premedical students, interns, residents and practicing physicians. Founded in 1950, AMSA continues its commitment to improving medical training and the nation's health.

    Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA)

    National Organization (organization that is affiliated with a national membership organization)

    Mission: The Asian Pacific American Medical Students Association (APAMSA) at Michigan State University (MSU) College of Human Medicine (CHM) hopes to promote education and engagement in the unique health challenges of Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) communities, as well as the sociopolitical issues affecting APIA communities and Asian populations abroad. We aspire to accomplish our vision through organizing networking events with physicians and community leaders, interactive documentary screenings, connecting students with active local organizations, and serving the needs of the local APIA community, all with the hopes of training culturally sensitive and socially responsible future physicians.

    The College of Human Medicine's APAMSA chapter will be guided by the following motivations:

    • Explore APIA identity, heritage, history, and struggles
    • Highlight, unite, and represent diversity
    • Learn and educate on health care disparities
    • Enhance cultural humility

    MSU CHM Chess Group

    Mission: The purpose of the MSU CHM Chess Interest Group is to provide a collaborative space where students can build their confidence and skills in chess. We aim to reduce stigma regarding barriers to entry and to increase exposure to the benefits of practicing chess such as developing pattern recognition and improvements in memory. We also strive to create a friendly, compassionate environment, where students can bond, build relationships with the greater community through outreach, and enjoy a creative outlet outside of the curriculum.

    CHM Serve 

    College of Human Medicine only Organization/Group (organization that only exists in the college)

    Mission: The primary purpose of CHM Serve is to administer the Pharmacy Assist program at the Care Free Clinic at 1100 West Saginaw Street, Suite 5, Lansing, MI, 48915. CHM Serve is responsible for staffing the Pharmacy Assist office on a weekly basis with volunteers, at days and hours determined by the executive board.

    Ancillary purposes of CHM Serve are to raise awareness about lack of prescription drug coverage and health insurance coverage generally, as well as healthcare challenges concerning underserved populations.

    Additional outreach programs and support will be added as needed and possible with the support of Care Free staff and patients.

    Mission: We, students at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, establish the Surgery Interest Group, an organization founded on the principles of service, professionalism, humility, collaboration, and critical thinking.     Mission: The Interventional Radiology Interest Group will facilitate exposure to and foster intrigue in future careers in Interventional Radiology.     Mission: MSU-CHM MSPA is established for the expressed purpose of increasing the competency and confidence of medical students, healthcare professionals, and faculty in serving Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Intersex, Asexual/Agender/Aromantic+ (LGBTQIA+) patient populations. Through campus involvement, workshops, and community outreach, our mission is to improve the health of LGBTQIA+ patient populations and to take steps to acknowledge and address the injustices that contribute to health disparities in marginalized communities, specifically Black, Indigenous, & People of Color (BIPOC) and trans folks. We believe it is important to center BIPOC and trans folks in the work of the organization because of the way that intersectionality impacts people who belong to multiple minority groups.

    Mission: The Medical Student Research Journal (MSRJ) is the longest-running international academic journal in the United States authored, reviewed, edited, and published by medical students for medical students. It is dedicated to promoting the scientific achievements of medical students, teaching principles of peer and article review, and providing editorial, publishing and leadership learning experiences. Medical students worldwide are invited to submit manuscripts and serve as trained reviewers. The MSRJ publishes original research, case studies, editorials, research letters, reviews, and reflections that meet required standards, are authored by a medical student, and advance science. It is sponsored by the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.

    Mission: Medicine, Film and the Arts seeks to do three things: 1) Offer space for medical students to explore artistic interests of any kind and to explore and engage with difficult or complex subject matter through an arts lens. 2) We aim to build community partnerships in both Grand Rapids and East Lansing to support community endeavors. 3) To give medical students a respite from the rigors of medical school and do fun stuff together, from paint nights to film festivals. The sum of these goals culminates into the idea of adding a dimension of education to our medical training that engages a part of life that typical medical training doesn’t touch: the human experience through art and expression.

    Mission: The mission of the Radiology Interest Group is to inspire, increase exposure, and connect students who have an interest in radiology to faculty, resources and like-minded students to learn more about the field and ultimately determine if this is the right career path for them.     Mission: ROC amplifies diverse narratives of migrant and displaced communities through alliance and relationship building. We work to make the US a more welcoming place to resettling communities and to eradicate refugee camps as a normative concept.

    The MSU CHM ROC chapter is centered around three pillars: education, service, and advocacy. ROC strives to foster a culturally conscious care community by educating the greater Grand Rapids community about the health disparities caused by the global migration crisis. Furthermore, we aspire to serve local families through a network of medical students and physicians by providing resources for the recently resettled. Lastly, we advocate to help eliminate prejudice and create discussion amongst our community.

    Mission: Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians.

    SNMA chapters based at allopathic and osteopathic medical schools throughout the nation, and some colleges, implement our programs and activities locally. SNMA programs are designed to serve the health needs of underserved communities and communities of color. In addition, SNMA is dedicated both to ensuring that medical education and services are culturally sensitive to the needs of diverse populations and to increasing the number of African-American, Latino, and other students of color entering and completing medical school.
