Community-Based Faculty Appointments
As a community-based medical school, we depend on the generosity of nearly 5,000 faculty physicians who donate their time, medical expertise and clinical acumen to benefit our students and residents throughout the state of Michigan.
Most community faculty are appointed in the prefix category and use a “clinical” or “adjunct” prefix with their title (e.g., clinical assistant professor, adjunct associate professor).
The college relies on some community faculty to fill important administrative roles and/or to contribute significant time to supporting affiliated or sponsored residency programs and fellowships. These faculty are typically compensated by MSU, not directly but through contracts with their employers. If they meet eligibility criteria, these faculty can be appointed in our non-prefix category and omit “clinical” or “adjunct” from their title. Community faculty with significant research collaborations with MSU-paid faculty may also qualify for this system. Faculty appointed in this category must agree to meet more extensive expectations for contributions to MSU that span all MSU mission areas, and more robust reappointment and promotion expectations.
