Career Advising at MSU College of Human Medicine
Career Advising at MSU College of Human Medicine is a longitudinal program spanning across all four years of medical school with the goal of providing education, advising, support, and mentorship to students as they create an understanding of their values, work interests, and options related to specialty choices. Career advising occurs in many settings including individual advising, small and large group education and advising in a curricular model. All medical students have access and can network with physicians in every specialty across our multicampus institution.
First and second year students, in small groups, meet with physician career advisors who facilitate early discussions related to exploring specialties in a meaningful way, research ideas, and networking opportunities. The AAMC Careers in Medicine (CiM) curriculum is also used to program large group career discussions and educational experiences.
Third- and fourth-year students develop advising relationships with the Community Assistant Deans within their clinical campuses and paired with subspecialty career advisors who help to guide creation of competitive residency applications.
The Assistant Dean for Student Career and Professional Development and the Director of Medical Student Career Advising have an active role in the organization and facilitation of our Career Advising Program. They deliver appropriate training for all physician advisors involved in the career advising system to ensure clear, consistent, and up to date advising practices are engaged throughout the college.
