  • Bio

    Kelly Armstrong, MD, is the Assistant Dean for Student Career and Professional Development at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.

    Dr. Armstrong is a 2010 graduate of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and a Lansing native. She joined the college in 2016 as a faculty fellow in the Shared Discovery Curriculum and as assistant professor in the Office of Medical Education Research and Development. In 2018, she was appointed the Chief of the Morrill Learning Society. She has served on the Student Competency Committee, as chair of the LCME Accreditation Self Study Report Committee and co-chair of the LCME Accreditation Sub-Committee on Educational Programs.

    Dr. Armstrong completed her graduate medical education training at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she completed a preliminary year in the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Armstrong was a resident physician in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Mayo Clinic. Following her residency, Dr. Armstrong completed her fellowship training in Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Research at the Veterans Administration Puget Sound Healthcare System in Seattle, Washington.

    In 2015, Dr. Armstrong joined the staff at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital as a general physiatrist with a clinical focus on musculoskeletal rehab and spasticity. She previously served as the assistant program director of the Mary Free Bed residency program.

    She has consulting privileges with Corewell Health, University of Michigan West and Trinity Health in Grand Rapids.

    Deana Wilbanks, Ed.D. is the Director for Medical Student Career Advising and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine. She a licensed professional counselor in higher education who enjoys teaching and providing career advising to medical students across all four years of medical school. Dr. Wilbanks has been with the College of Human Medicine for almost 20 years. When asking her about her favorite part of her job, she always says “spending time with the students, helping them explore various career paths in medicine, and assisting them in preparing for the residency application and match.”  When she is not reviewing medical student CVs, personal statements, or leading a career advising seminars, she is training physician faculty in advising students or working on research projects. Dr. Wilbanks has engaged in scholarly activity examining how medical students make specialty choice decisions resulting in multiple presentations and publications. She is also a faculty advsior for the Medical Business Finance intersession offered each spring semester.

    Dr. Wilbanks earned a Doctorate of Education in Administration and Leadership from Michigan State University. She also has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Counseling degree from the University of North Georgia.
