Clinical/Adjunct "Prefix"

Faculty in the clinical/adjunct appointment system with a prefix rank (clinical associate professor, adjunct assistant professor, etc.) are usually not paid MSU employees but provide their service to advance the educational, research, and/or service missions of the College of Human Medicine.   • Preparing for Review

    Clinical/adjunct prefix faculty currently holding the clinical or adjunct assistant professor or the clinical or adjunct associate professor rank initiate an application for promotion at the department level, Departments are responsible for providing guidance about procedures and timelines to their faculty.

    Faculty are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the department procedures and timelines prior to submitting an application for promotion and/or completing the required forms and documentation.

    The chairperson of the appropriate academic department has final responsibility and authority for recommending candidates to the Dean of the College of Human Medicine for promotion.

    • Five years as a clinical assistant professor or adjunct assistant professor in the college is normally considered a minimum period of involvement for consideration for advancement to the rank of clinical associate professor or adjunct associate professor.
    • Five years at the rank of clinical associate professor or adjunct associate professor is normally considered a minimum period of involvement for consideration for advancement to the rank of clinical professor or adjunct professor.
  • Promotion Process

    Faculty candidate completes and submits to department:

    1. The clinical/adjunct prefix faculty promotion application form (Form on Progress and Excellence for Clinical/Adjunct Prefix Faculty)
    2. The current or most recent appointment renewal (reappointment) form
    3. Reflective Essay
    4. CV
    5. A letter of support from a supervisor directly knowledgeable about performance in the educational, research and/or service missions of the department and college
    6. Other evidence that can document:
      1. Sustained excellence in activity that supports the programs and goals of the primary academic department and the college. Include as appropriate to your role:
        1. Evidence of sustained excellence with CHM students and with learners in CHM-affiliated programs and activities, in one or more of these areas: teaching, mentoring, advising or career counseling.
        2. Evidence of participation in the scholarship of discovery, integration, application and/or teaching and learning
      2. A record of engagement in service to the profession (see criteria for specific requirements for the rank sought).
      3. Consistent and persistent professional improvement which would serve as a basis for predicting continuing professional effectiveness and growth for the remainder of the applicant’s professional career

     

    Departments collect the promotion application form and required documentation from the candidate and review applications according to departmentally determined procedures. The chairperson has final responsibility and authority for recommending any candidate for promotion to the dean of the College of Human Medicine. Once approved at the department level the application form and supporting documentation must be submitted to the CHM Office of Faculty Affairs and Development (FAD) by the last working day in May.

    The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Staff Administration reviews all applications and makes a final decision. Notice of approved promotions is forwarded to the appropriate Community Assistant Dean's office. The Community Assistant Dean's office processes the change in rank after July 1.
