Michael Brown, MD, assistant dean for academic affairs and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, was recently honored by the American College of Emergency Physicians, the national medical specialty society representing more than 38,000 emergency physicians, residents, and medical students in the United States. In recognition of his lifelong contributions, Brown received the “James D. Mills Outstanding Contribution to Emergency Medicine” award at the ACEP annual Scientific Assembly earlier this month.

The award celebrates Brown’s leadership across regional, national, and international emergency medicine organizations. He served on the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians Board of Directors, as chair of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Clinical Policies Committee, and was senior associate editor for the Annals of Emergency Medicine Systematic Review Snapshot series.

More recently, he led the Key Advances Panel for the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and served as president of the Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine (AACEM).

During his early faculty tenure, Brown developed an interest in translating research evidence into clinical practice. This focus led him to pursue an MSc in Epidemiology, specializing in evidence synthesis and diagnostic test accuracy meta-analysis. He has built a strong clinical research program as founding chair of MSU’s Department of Emergency Medicine.

In addition to patient care and his leadership roles at MSU, Brown serves as a mentor to medical students and faculty. He is a 1986 graduate of the College of Human Medicine.
