On Saturday, May 9, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine will confer degrees of 177 medical doctors at its annual Commencement Ceremony. Bobby Mukkamala, MD, president of the American Medical Association (AMA), will deliver this year’s commencement address. Mukkamala is a board-certified head and neck surgeon in Flint and clinical associate professor at MSU College of Human Medicine.

Dr. Mukkamala was elected president of the AMA in June 2025. The AMA is the largest and only national association that convenes more than 200 state and specialty medical societies and other critical stakeholders. Founded in 1847, the AMA promotes the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health.

As an active member of the medical profession and his community, Dr. Mukkamala has served in a number of leadership roles including board chair of the Michigan State Medical Society Board of Directors, president of the Genesee County Medical Society (GCMS), board member of the Foundation for Flint, chair of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, and a trustee of the C.S. Mott Foundation.

Deeply committed to the revitalization of his hometown, Dr. Mukkamala returned to Flint after completing his residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago in 2000. Today, he shares an office with his wife, Nita Kulkarni, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist. Together, they have been part of the city’s revitalization.
