MSU College of Human Medicine Flint Campus receives community health award

September 17, 2025

MSU College of Human Medicine was recently honored for their contributions in community health. The nonprofit health care organization Genesee Health Plan (GHP) presented faculty and staff from the Flint campus and the Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health the “Community Partnership Award” at the Health Care Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony last month.

The award recognizes the College of Human Medicine’s long-standing present in Flint, educating physicians since 1971 and the community-driven approach to public health.

GHP highlighted a few key collaborations in a recent news release:

  • Since 2018, MSU has provided research support, delivered health care services, and shared health-related information with community members. The partnership has played an essential role in enhancing GHP’s initiatives and expanding their impact within the community through various collaborative projects.

  • The Flint Center for Health Equity Solutions (FCHES) Community Consortium, spearheaded by Michigan State University, was established in 2018 to engage community members and partner organizations in discussions related to health disparities within the community, with particular attention to circumstances following the Flint Water Crisis. Jim Milanowski, GHP and Drs. Kent Key and Heatherlun Uphold served as Consortium Co-chairs.

  • In 2023, Dr. Jennifer Edwards-Johnson, Dr. Kaitlin Liroff and representatives from GHP participated in a health segment on NBC 25 focused on adult and adolescent vaccinations, with particular emphasis on HPV and the significance of immunization.

  • The Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health presented Jim Milanowski, President & CEO of GHP, with the “Difference Makers Award” in 2023 for the organizations contributions to advancing community health and increasing access to high-quality, affordable care.
