Match Day 2025: MSU College of Human Medicine Celebrates 99.5% Residency Placement
March 24, 2025
On Friday, March 21, fourth-year students at MSU College of Human Medicine anxiously awaited 12 p.m. ET – the exact moment on Match Day when they’d rip open the envelopes that revealed their next steps as doctors.
It’s one of the most significant days in the life of a medical student. Over many months, graduating medical students apply to and interview with residencies in their specialty of interest, then rank programs in order of their preference. Through the National Residency Match Program, students are then placed in the residency highest in their rank order list that matches the residency preference list.
Joined by family and friends, the Class of 2025 gathered across the college’s eight statewide campuses to celebrate the milestone and learned where they will begin residency training on July 1, 2025.
"[This] is the sum of hard work early in the morning and late at night, finding resilience within myself when challenges set in, and keeping the spark that got me here burning bright,” said Karmyn Vickery, a student from the Upper Peninsula Campus. On Friday, she discovered she was matched at Corewell Health in Grand Rapids.
“My career in pediatrics begins today,” said Vickery. “I’m looking forward to making a difference in lives of children and their families.”
This year, an impressive 99.5% of graduating seniors secured residency placements and 59% will remain in Michigan.
The news on Match Day was not only important to Robert Dubisky, but his growing family, as well.
“I recently became a father, and I am grateful to share that I matched with the UP Health System - Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program,” said Dubisky. “I have the privilege of continuing to serve the Marquette community — a place I’ve grown to love — while raising my son here with my family. I look forward to the years ahead, both as a physician and as a member of this wonderful community.”
This year, 38.9% of seniors will be heading into primary care. The top five specialty placements include emergency medicine (15%), internal medicine (15%), family medicine (14.4%), psychiatry (9.4%) and surgery (7.2%).
Dennis Boynton, who matched into internal medicine at Henry Ford Health, was motivated to become a doctor by his mother who was diagnosed with congestive heart failure when he was 13.
“My mom struggled with health issues for much of her life. Getting to care for her was such a privilege, and it pushed me to a career in medicine,” said Boynton.
Boynton’s mother passed away just months before this important milestone.
Match Day “has a deeper meaning for me than I could’ve imagined now,” he said. “My mom was my biggest cheerleader…I know she’s watching over me now and she would be so excited to see me at this point. One of the last things I told her before she passed away was that she was going to be with me every step of the way from here on out, with each and every patient that I will be taking care of.”
Of the college’s 182 graduating seniors, two participated in the Military match.
Heading to a family medicine residency at Jacksonville Naval Hospital in Florida, Gabriel Meriweather said he’s excited for this next adventure in life.
“Knowing that I wanted to be a doctor and have always wanted to serve our country in the military, this was the perfect way to blend the two,” Meriweather said. “I am thrilled to face the challenges that are sure to come and cannot wait to grow into a physician for our active duty/reserve and veteran populations.”
Before the start of residency, the Class of 2025 will reunite one last time on May 10 at the College of Human Medicine’s Commencement Ceremony at the Breslin Student Events Center.
