The Indiana native graduated from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine earlier this year.

"I am honored to receive this award and very grateful to MSU for making this possible by providing such a supportive learning environment for me as a medical student,” Anderson-Chavarria said.

The award acknowledges student members of MAFP for academic excellence, leadership, service, and dedication to pursuing a career as a family physician.

“This year’s recipient, Lily Anderson-Chavarria, is a powerful reminder of why the future of our profession is so bright,” shared Karlene Ketola, MAFP’s Chief Executive Officer.

During her time at the College of Human Medicine, Anderson-Chavarria co-designed and taught an elective on spirituality and medicine, served on a speaker committee, mentored MD/PhD students, and created a volunteering project for medical students. She led a multi-year effort to build a partnership between MSU Sports Medicine and the Lansing Roller Derby team, which includes community-based participatory research aimed at improving safety in the sport.

Anderson-Chavarria hopes to pursue a sports medicine fellowship and looks forward to practicing family medicine, focusing on prevention and supporting underserved communities.

“It has been a privilege to train in Michigan and I look forward to completing my residency in family medicine at Corewell-Wayne,” she said.
