October 5, 2025
Two College of Human Medicine faculty members were honored by the American College of Physicians (ACP) at the 2025 Michigan Chapter Annual Scientific Meeting last month. The ACP is the largest medical specialty organization in the world, composing of internal medicine specialists and subspecialists. Ade Olomu, MD, MS, FMCP, FACP, associate dean for Faculty Affairs, and Blanch B. & Frederick C. Swartz Endowed Professor of Medicine, received the Fostering Diversity Award. The award is given to an individual with outstanding accomplishments in advancing diversity in clinical medicine or research and improving access to care for diverse populations.
“To be recognized by my peers for advancing diversity in medicine and research is both gratifying and inspiring,” Olomu said. “This award is not just about me—it reflects the collective efforts of so many colleagues, students, community partners, and patients who have shared their voices and experiences, and who remind us daily why equity in health care matters.”
Cara Poland, MD, MEd, FACP, DFASAM, associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, received the Jerry Yee Mentorship Award. The award recognizes physicians with a commitment to supporting the advancement of their students, trainees, and junior colleagues.
“Mentorship is one of the greatest joys of my career. To me, it means walking alongside the next generation of physicians and helping them see both the challenges and the possibilities in medicine,” Poland said. “Receiving the ACP Michigan Chapter Mentorship Award is deeply meaningful because it reflects the relationships I’ve been privileged to build with learners and colleagues. I would not be where I am today without the guidance of my own mentors, and this recognition reminds me how important it is to keep that cycle of support alive."
