Rising Spartan MDs celebrate Match Day across Michigan

On Friday, March 15, fourth-year students at MSU College of Human Medicine anxiously awaited 12 p.m. ET – the exact moment on Match Day when they’d rip open the envelopes that revealed their next steps as doctors.
Joined by family and friends, the Class of 2024 gathered across the college’s eight statewide campuses to celebrate the milestone and learn where they are headed for residency this summer.
This year, 98% of MSU College of Human Medicine’s seniors secured residency placements, with 37% going into primary care.
“We’ve been working for this our whole lives,” said Vincent Thieu, a Grand Rapids Campus student.
Thieu cheered “New York, let’s go!” after opening his envelope to find his top ranked program – physical medicine and rehabilitation at NewYork-Presbyterian. “This is everything I wanted, I got very lucky.”
Aldana Garcia, among the inaugural group of Detroit Campus students, discovered she’ll be going back to Southern California for a dermatology residency at UCLA.
“After four amazing years in Michigan, I am overjoyed to return home and be with my family again,” said Garcia. “The college provided the ideal environment for me to flourish and successfully match in a competitive specialty.”
More than half of the graduating class will stay in Michigan for their residency program.
Tamarandobra (Dobra) Ogeh will be one of those residents staying in Michigan. During her third year of medical school, she completed a sports medicine rotation with the Detroit Lions, alongside Henry Ford Health physicians. On Match Day, she found out that she’ll continue training with Henry Ford Health in their orthopaedic surgery residency program.
Kyle Bivins matched into emergency medicine at Indiana University. Bivins was inspired to pursue that specialty by several patients he treated during a clinical rotation in the emergency department.
“They were so happy and appreciative to receive care from someone who looked like them,” said Bivins. “I don’t think anything else could have made me feel more motivated to continue… so that I can be that doctor for many more patients.”
Upper Peninsula Region Campus student Daniel Brown and Traverse City Campus student Meredith Adams participated in the match as a couple. This summer, they are heading to Eastern Maine Medical Center for family medicine residencies.
“Medicine brought us together and now we’re on to Maine,” said Adams.
