Alumna Carmen Green, MD, Named Trailblazer in Higher Education

Michigan State University College of Human Medicine graduate Carmen Renée Green, MD (‘87) has been selected for City & State’s "Trailblazers in Higher Education" list.
As an anesthesiologist expert named dean of the CUNY New York School of Medicine in 2021, Dr. Green was selected for the inaugural list based on her leadership and commitment to underserved communities and increasing student access for Black and Brown communities, thus tackling New York’s physician shortage and its glaring health disparities.
The 2024 "Trailblazers in Higher Education" list by City & State, a New York-based media organization covering politics and policies, features presidents and leaders across academia; high-profile elected officials; labor leaders; philanthropists; advocates and others serving in the postsecondary education sector.
While over half of New Yorkers are Black or Latinx, only 16% of New York City’s doctors are. As a recognized scholar of urban and underrepresented in health issues, Dr. Green is leading important changes that increase the diverse student population to reflect the racial, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity of communities needing talented, empathetic doctors.
Dr. Green’s approach and commitment to improving medical school access and success for students was recently featured by U.S. News & World Report. She also authored the op-ed “CUNY Med’s mission fits in Black History Month” for the New York Daily News, and a letter to the editor in the Washington Post titled, “Discrimination embedded in medicine’s early framework endures.”
