Dr. Paul Hemmer, MD, MPH, Colonel (Ret.), U.S. Air Force, and a nationally recognized leader in medical education at the Uniformed Services University, will be visiting MSU’s Grand Rapids campus to receive the Jack L. Maatsch Visiting Scholar for Medical Education Award during the MedEd Scholarship Showcase on Thurs, May 14. He is available to meet with students between 3:00 and 5:00 PM, an opportunity that may be of particular interest for HPSP (Health Professions Scholarship Program) students given Dr. Hemmer’s distinguished military and academic leadership background. His presentation, Conversation-Based Medical Education: The Other CBME, will explore how conversation theory strengthens assessment, highlights limitations of “objectivity,” and improves evaluation of learner performance. Dr. Hemmer currently serves as Vice-Chair for Educational Programs in the Department of Medicine at USUHS and has held national leadership roles in undergraduate medical education. He welcomes conversations about military medicine, medical education, professionalism, assessment, and academic leadership. MD and DO students (HPSP and non-HPSP) are invited to attend the talk and meet with him.
