Maatsch Scholar Presentation
OMERAD Jack L. Maatsch Visiting Scholar in Medical Education Fund
The purpose of the Jack L. Maatsch Visiting Scholar in Medical Education Fund is to stimulate and support interaction around ideas and projects in medical education, with primary focus on the development and assessment of clinical competence related to the full span of professional training.
The program accomplishes this purpose through its support of visiting scholars to OMERAD in the College of Human Medicine. Distinguished visiting scholars provide a broader perspective from which faculty, students, and others may view their work, providing insights and experiences from other outstanding centers of medical education research and development.
2025 Presentation: Professional Identity Formation as Immigration
Just as immigrants from various countries travel great distances in hopes of calling a new country home, our medical learners also undertake great journeys. For some, their trips might involve geographic treks; however, all will undertake great private journeys across any number of terrains in the name of professional identity formation. In this session, we’ll consider professional identity formation as a form of immigration. Through this framing, we will consider the deeply personal—and sometimes painful—work that is involved in taking on the responsibilities of the white coat.
