Anesthesiology conference brings medical students, residents and physicians together

Michigan State University College of Human Medicine students recently attended the Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists (MSA) Annual Meeting held in Grand Rapids. Supported by Michael Lewis, MD, chair of the Department of Anesthesia, the record-breaking turnout of students showcased both academic excellence through numerous case reports and collaboration within the field.
Medical students Hadi Allouch, Michael Pellizzari, Allison Cropsey, Alexander Schreck, Adam Kapp, Ali Jizziny, Kennedy Quinn, and Hira Ali presented. Their cases highlighted a wide range of educational and complex scenarios, including the management of massive pulmonary embolism, a case of cardiac surgery complicated by hemotympanum, and the challenges of neuraxial anesthesia in a patient with achondroplasia.
For Hadi Allouch, presenting a case report was both challenging and inspiring. “Preparing and presenting allowed me to dive into a specific niche of the field, while also hearing the perspectives of experts,” he said.
Leading up to the event, students closely collaborated with Henry Ford anesthesiology physicians and residents. “They were present throughout the entire process, from applying to the conference to presenting the case report,” said Allouch. “With their guidance, I was able to nurture an effective presentation and make the most of meeting anesthesiologists from other institutions in the state.”
Allouch also emphasized the community that emerged among College of Human Medicine students. “We all helped each other prepare for our presentations, introduced one another to faculty and physicians, and collectively gained lifelong friends in the field,” he said. “My advice to future MSU students is simple: just go for it. The environment is welcoming and supportive, and you will come away with invaluable experiences.”
For Alexander Schreck, the MSA meeting offered not just an academic platform, it also offered a chance to connect with leaders in anesthesiology. “I chose to come to MSA because I saw it as a tremendous networking opportunity to meet people with similar interests as me,” Schreck said. “I enjoyed meeting with MSA leadership, program directors, and fellow students, and gained tremendous insights that will help me during my third year and the residency application process.”
Schreck also valued attending lectures by national leaders: “My favorite presentation of the conference was given by Dr. Ronald Harter. He provided valuable insights on the anesthesia workforce and advocacy efforts at both the state and national levels. I left this lecture feeling more comfortable about the future job market post-residency and reaffirmed my commitment to anesthesia.”
Ali Jizziny appreciated the professional growth that came with attending the Annual Meeting. “Having the opportunity to present at MSA was an incredible experience. It not only allowed me to deepen my knowledge of the field but also gave me the chance to connect with others who share an interest in anesthesia and are actively involved in the specialty,” Jizziny said.
The student participation at the event reinforced the growing role of MSU College of Human Medicine in shaping the future of anesthesiology in Michigan.
