CME Accreditation Fees

As of January 13, 2020, MSU College of Human Medicine has a revised application and fee structure. It incorporates new accreditation criteria which allows ACCME's Discounted Application Fee to be applied. A 50 percent fee reduction is available for activities addressing at least two commendation criteria (see Criterion 23-38 of the ACCME Accreditation Requirements and Descriptions).

Michigan State University

There is no charge for MSU College of Human Medicine departments for events solely sponsored by MSU.

Full-Service Event Management for MSU Departments Only

Planning Guide:

The Office of Continuing Medical Education will complete the application for CME credit for MSU College of Human Medicine departments using our full-service event management services. To do so, we will need the following information and materials:

Must have all steps completed before submitting request of event to CME.

  1. Needs assessment
  2. List of confirmed planning committee members with contact information (email, phone number, assistant information)
  3. Confirmed goals and objectives for conference
  4. Choose date for course/conference. Needs to avoid competing programs and holidays

Level One: Basic Registration Services

  • Registration support, registration payments, support ongoing needs of registrants, create and maintain database
  • $30.00 per registrant

Level Two: Level One Services, plus

  • Develop/distribute conference packets, name badges
  • Speaker management & support/per speaker (contract negotiations, honoraria, AV)
  • $45.00 per registrant

Level Three: Comprehensive Event Management, includes Services from Levels One and Two plus

  • On-site presence during event
  • Registration support & AV support
  • Hotel logistics with catering, setups, troubleshooting
  • Marketing support
  • Evaluation tabulation
  • Financial tabulation
  • $60.00 per registrant

Meeting Planning Direct Expense Reimbursement may include (but not limited to)

  • Registrant supplies: binders, badges, etc.

CME Accreditation Process

  1. Complete the MSU CHM CME Pre-Application 
    6-9+ months prior

  2. Complete the MSU CHM CME Application
    A link to the application will be sent upon approval of the pre-application, 4-6 months prior

    • Required for all activities requesting CME credit.  

    • A projected budget listing anticipated expenses and income AND a detailed agenda listing times, topics, and presenters are required. 

    • Obtain Disclosure Forms from all planning committee members. This form must be completed by all individuals in a position to control content (planner, speaker, author, moderator, reviewers etc.).
    • Begin to obtain Speaker Information Forms with completed needs assessments and Disclosure Forms from all faculty who will be participating in the educational event.

    • An application must be submitted and approved before any event advertisement/marketing materials are designed, printed or distributed.

  3. Submit CME application
    3+ months prior

    • Planning documents and supporting materials should be sent to the office no less than 8 weeks prior to the date of the activity promotion.

    • The pre-application approval process takes approximately 5 business days depending on the completeness of the application materials.

  4. Begin marketing your event
    3+ months prior

    • All advertisement/marketing materials must be reviewed and approved by the CME office before printing and distribution. No mention of CME credits can be made on marketing materials unless official approval has been provided by the CME office (you cannot state that CME credit is pending or being applied for).

  5. Begin seeking promotional exhibitors (live in-person meetings only) and applying for educational grants (if applicable)
    3+ months prior
    • Pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers (ineligible companies) can provide financial support for CME-certified activities through educational grants. They cannot be involved with any planning, including identification or selection of speakers, topics, etc. You can arrange for promotional exhibit space at your meeting. Note, an exhibit fee must be charged to all exhibitors and the exhibit space must remain separate from the educational space.

    • All grant letters of agreement must be signed by the MSU CHM CME Director.

  6. Obtain remaining speaker/faculty disclosures and resolve potential conflicts of interest

    • The disclosure form must be completed by all remaining individuals in a position to control content (speaker, moderator, etc.).

    • Individuals who have identified any financial relationships on their CME disclosure form must have their potential COI resolved prior to the activity.  The primary method to resolve COI includes emailing all slides to the CME office for prospective review and approval.
  7. Prepare meeting materials/content

    • Meeting materials must be educational in nature and not promotion of a specific product or service.

  8. CME Activity Information Page for Syllabus.
    • The CME office will create the CME Activity Information Page for you. All information on this document is required per ACCME Standards and MSU CME policies. Activity participants must be provided with this document/information at the start of the activity.

    • Evaluation, Certificate, Outcome Measure Survey Process
      All one-time activities require participants to fill out an evaluation (following the activity), and an Outcome Measure Survey (within 90 days). Evaluations can be customized to fit your activity.

    • Certificates for participants in attendance must include the accreditation statements from the American Medical Association and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education MSU CME Office. A certificate is obtained after the online evaluation process.

  9. Before Event

    • All marketing materials must be reviewed and approved prior to distribution
    • Final agenda
    • Budget
    • Completed speaker disclosure forms
    • Speaker presentation(s)
    • Evaluation method(s)
    • Floor plan (if applicable)
  10. Post-Activity Requirements
    Due within 30 business days following the activity

    1. Final copy of CME agenda/brochure.
    2. Completed attendance sheets
    3. Any supplemental handouts distributed
    4. The budget reconciliation for entire activity
