Bio

Timothy Zacharewski, PhD, is a professor and interim chair of Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.  Dr. Zacharewski’s research focuses in the area of receptor mediated toxicology. In his laboratory, the primary focus is on mechanistic toxicology that involves elucidating how a chemical elicits its adverse effects. More specifically, he is interested in exploring how chemicals cause changes in gene expression that result in hormone-dependent cancers and compromised reproductive fitness. Research efforts are currently divided into the following two areas: endocrine disruption, to examine receptor-mediated endocrine disrupting activities of chemicals and natural products in humans and wildlife; and toxicogenomics, to assess the effects of developmental exposure to endocrine disruptors on fertility and reproductive tissue gene expression profiles using gene expression array technology developed as a result of the Human Genome Project.

Dr. Zacharwski received his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry with Microbiology Emphasis from the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, and his PhD in Toxicology from Texas A&M University.
