Bio

John F. Butzer, MD, FAAN, FACPE, is director of the Division of Rehabilitation. Dr. Butzer is known for his work in value-based rehabilitation, improving quality of life for people with spinal cord injuries and the Learning Health System initiative. He completed his medical education at the University of Illinois and his internship and residency at the University of Iowa. He previously held faculty appointments at the University of Iowa. Dr. Butzer was chief medical officer at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital for 29 years and currently is Director Emeritus of Research at Mary Free Bed.

Dr. Butzer’s work in spinal cord injury is funded by the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, and he has subcontract funding from NIDILRR. He’s active in the educational activities of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. Recent publications include “Measuring Value in Postacute Care” and “Commentary on the Challenges and Benefits of Implementing Standardized Outcome Measures,” published in the Archives of Physical Medicine, and “Rehabilitation and Participation by Design: Integrating a Social Ecological Approach with Universal Design to Increase Participation” and “Add Value for Consumers,” published in Disability and Health Journal.
