MSU College of Human Medicine | Charles Stuart Mott Foundation | Flint Community

This innovative partnership brings together Michigan State University's research expertise, the Mott Foundation's philanthropic support, and the Flint community's lived experience to address critical health disparities.

In 2022, the Mott Foundation's generous $25M grant established the Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health, the first academic department co-developed and co-led by community members. The department focuses on health behaviors, behavioral health, chronic disease, and reducing health disparities - four key priorities identified by the Flint community. As part of the $25M grant, $5M is earkmarked for the Mott Match. Through this match initiative, gifts will be matched 1:1 by the Mott Foundation. Community contributions will help create four endowed faculty positions that will:

  •  Drive local economic growth in Flint

  • Attract NIH funding for community-based research

  • Recruit and retain leading faculty to address health disparities
