Foundations of Leadership in Academic Medicine

The College of Human Medicine Faculty Affairs and Development presents Foundations of Leadership in Academic Medicine. This three part seriess was created to support faculty in all career stages that are interested in exploring the core elements of effective leadership.

In the first of three sessions in the Building Leaders in Academic Medicine series, participants will:

  • Examine value based leadership

  • Review the foundations of leadership

  • Develop strategies for leading during difficult times

We are honored to welcome Dr. Marsha Rappley as our featured speaker.

Dr. Rappley brings a wealth of experience and insight, and we are truly fortunate to have her join us from Los Angeles. Her expertise and engaging style make her the ideal leader to kick off this important series.

Dr. Rappley has held several prominent leadership roles, including Dean of the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University, CEO of VCU Health, and Vice President of VCU Health Sciences. Throughout her career, she has built strong partnerships with external organizations, guided major institutional changes, and played a key role in developing an NCI-designated National Cancer Center that went on to become a Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as the Children's Hospital at VCU. Dr. Rappley held previous administrative roles as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Interim Chair of Pediatrics. She has also contributed nationally, chairing the AAMC Board of Directors and Council of Deans, along with serving on the FDA Pediatric Advisory Committee. She spent seven years on the LCME, served on the subspecialty board for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, and was honored with the Gold Humanism in Medicine Award by medical students of the CHM.
