Toward Achieving Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Headache Medicine: A Perspective on African-American Disparities in Migraine

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:

  • Review some of the current data that explores race and migraine
  • Review barriers and challenges of under- and uninsured migraine populations (in brie
  • Identify social determinants and other factors that may contribute to migraine disparities and inequities in African American
  • Identify proposed causes of pain disparities
  • Appreciate the generations of health disparities research
  • Identify potential solutions for equity in AA in headache medicine

Presented by Dr. Larry Charleston IV

Dr. Larry Charleston IV is Director of the Headache & Facial Pain Division, Director of Faculty Development and Professor of Neurology in Michigan State University Human College of Medicine Department of Neurology and Ophthalmology and Adjunct faculty at the Jefferson Headache Center.

Dr. Charleston graduated in Medicine from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. He completed his internship in internal medicine at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan, neurology residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and Headache Fellowship at the Thomas Jefferson Headache Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 

Dr. Charleston is certified in Adult Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and Headache Medicine by the United Council of Neurological Subspecialties.  He received his MSc degree in Health and Health Care Research from the National Clinical Scholars-Based Program at the University of Michigan (UM) in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2017.  Dr. Charleston is founder of Charleston Health Neurology & Head Pain Consultants, Co-founder of Charleston International in partnership with the Amway Corporation and Leadership Team Development, a National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities’ Research Institute Scholar, a UM Road Scholar, and a fellow of the American Headache Society.
