Clinical Educator Mentoring Program

The Office of Faculty Affairs and Development and Office of Medical Education Research and Development at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine offer a state-wide Clinician Educator Mentoring Program for clinician faculty who hold a "non-prefix" assistant professor rank in the health programs, fixed term or clinical/adjunct appointment systems with the medical school.

The Clinician Educator Mentor Program (CEMP) is designed to prepare these college faculty for long-term success in their educational and scholarly roles. The program will include mentoring, a structured curriculum, and a scholarly project. The goals of the CEMP:

• To learn personal and professional perspectives through peer mentoring in groups facilitated by successful clinician educator faculty members
• To provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to be successful in their faculty roles
• To design, conduct, and present a scholarly project of the caliber expected by peer-reviewed outlets

CEMP curricular topics are tailored to the cohort based on the results of a needs assessment conducted with CEMP applicants. The curriculum will address the broad categories of academic socialization, scholarly productivity and research, clinical and pre-clinical teaching, and career development. The curriculum is taught by experienced MSU faculty.

Program Format

The 16 month program includes the following components:

• Mentoring: Participants will be assigned a successful clinician educator faculty mentor.
• Monthly Web-based Meetings: participants will connect remotely for one half-day each month. Sessions generally run from 8:00AM to 11:00AM and include instruction and facilitated peer mentor group meetings.
• Quarterly On-Campus Meetings: participants will meet as a group four times during the academic year.
• Readings and Assignments: related to both the core curriculum and the scholarly project.
• Scholarly Project: each participant must design and implement a scholarly project.
• Scholarly Project Presentation: participants will come together to disseminate the results of their scholarly projects.

Program Expectations

Participants: All participants are asked to sign a letter of agreement, stating they will:

• pay a one-time non-refundable fee of $1,000
• attend and start on time for all half day sessions
• participate actively in all CEMP activities and assignments
• meet deadlines for completing and submitting all CEMP assignments
• complete and disseminate a mentored scholarly project
• actively work toward promotion in the College of Human Medicine
• devote an additional five to seven hours per week outside CEMP meeting days on readings, assignments, and their scholarly project
• obtain local IRB certification prior to start of program
• initiate a literature review on project prior to start of program
• develop a draft project statement.

Participant Supervisors: All supervisors are asked to sign a letter of agreement stating they will arrange schedules so faculty can attend all sessions of the CEMP.

Certificate of Completion

Participants receive a certificate of completion based on attendance at all half day sessions, completion of readings and assignments, mentor feedback, and successful completion of their scholarly project.
