Map Your Career Workshops

Registration for the Map Your Career workshops is available on a rolling basis. Access registration information for each workshop below.

The Map Your Career workshops began in the 2023-2024 academic year as an evolution of the college’s efforts to provide useful, sustainable support for career development for early career faculty. Pairing formal mentoring with access to self-guided career planning resources democratizes access to career advice and resources and helps faculty make better use of the mentors they have.

These workshops are designed for faculty at any career stage who are ready to think strategically about the next phase of their careers. While the tools around which each session is based were initially designed for early-career faculty, they have also been used with those later in their academic careers. We seek faculty interested in shared exploration of their use in the mid and late career.

The college offers a two-part series. Participants can engage in one or both parts as suits their needs.

Part 1: Career Roadmap

This one-page mapping tool helps academics plan a career path leading to a specific goal, such as their next promotion, in the next five to ten years. The tool includes structures for planning work in the usual effort areas of teaching, research, and service (including clinical work) over time and incorporates planning for personal growth and long-term career impact. The tool can be downloaded and completed using the self-guided resources. In addition, this workshop provides additional support to participants on the completion of the tool and strategies for using it to achieve career goals.

The Early Career Roadmap tool was developed at the University of Michigan Institute for Health Policy Innovation. Begin by visiting the IHPI website and downloading the self-guided tool and associated guidance. If, after reviewing the materials, you are interested in meeting up in a small group with other MSU faculty to work on your map, sign up here. (Link available soon, please check back).

Part 2: Mentor Map

This one-page mapping tool helps academics build out a robust mentoring network that supports the wide range of needs they can have on their career journeys. The tool can help faculty move beyond the traditional model of a single “guru-mentor” and toward the evolving, self-maintained network of mentors that research shows can better support faculty success and satisfaction.

The Mentor Map tool was developed by the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity. Begin with activating your NCFDD membership (free!) and viewing the webinar and attachments for Skill #7, Cultivating your Network of Mentors, Sponsors & Collaborators. Afterward, you can review the descriptions of each area of the map as you work on yours. If after reviewing the webinar and resources, you are interested in meeting up in a small group with other MSU faculty to work on your map, sign up here. (Link available soon, please check back).

Each workshop includes guidance on locating additional resources within and outside MSU to support your career development journey.
