Celebrating the Class of 2021

On May 8, in the parking lot of the Breslin Student Events Center, Interim Dean Aron Sousa, MD, conferred the medical degrees for 182 students, raising the total College of Human Medicine alumni to nearly 5,700 Spartan MDs during the medical school’s 57-year history.

Feature speaker for the ceremony was Joneigh Khaldun, MD, MPH, FACEP, chief medical executive for the state of Michigan and chief deputy director for health in the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Nine new Spartan MDs received their military promotions as captains in the Air Force and Army, and lieutenants in the Navy.

Forty-one percent of the graduates are entering a primary care residency (i.e., Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Medicine/Pediatrics, and Pediatrics).

Five* Spartan MDs matched into six new MSU primary care residency slots supported by the state-funded MIDOCs program. Each will receive $75K loan forgiveness for practicing in medically underserved areas:

  • 2 Psychiatry in Marquette
  • 2 Psychiatry in Traverse City
  • 2 Family Medicine in Alpena (*includes one MSU College of Human Medicine graduate)

Dual degrees were presented to two graduates who received MD-PhD degrees and one graduate received MD-MBA degrees.

In addition, 50 graduates received certificates in specialty programs, including Leadership in Medicine for the Underserved, Medical Partners in Public Health, Rural Community Health, Leadership in Rural Medicine and Rural Physician Program.
