  • Congratulations to the recipients of the College of Human Medicine's 2022 Fall Faculty Awards! Among those honored was Jack Lipton, PhD, who received the Lester J. Evans, MD, Distinguished Service Award.
  • Jourden Ashi, research administrator with Health Colleges Research Services, received the Future of the Field award from Society of Research Administrators International.
  • Jim Anthony, MSc, PhD, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, received the SPR Presidential Award, in recognition for his significant body of research or theory related to prevention and his impact on the field.
  • Michael Brown, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, was named editor for a new open access journal, Cochrane Evidence Synthesis and Methods.
  • Scott Counts, PhD, Department of Translational Neuroscience, received the Research in Aging Award from MSUAgeAlive, in recognition for his aging-related research.
  • Jennifer Edwards-Johnson, DO, community assistant dean, was appointed interim associate dean for community academic programs.
  • Nicholas M. Kanaan, PhD, Department of Translational Neuroscience, has been named the inaugural Maibach Smiley Alzheimer's Research Professor.
  • Morteza Mahmoudi, PhD, Department of Radiology and Precision Health Program, was named one of the most highly cited researchers by Clarivate Analytics.
  • Joel Maurer, MD, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology, has been elected vice chair to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Group on Student Affairs Executive Committee.
  • Danielle McCann joins the college as Director of Community Engagement & Outreach – Lansing. She will develop community engagement and outreach opportunities for students and faculty in the Lansing region, maintain community, K-12, and business connections, and strengthen hospital and clinical partnerships.

  • In recognition of her health equity work, Candace Smith-King, MD (CHM ’03) has received the 2022 Health Equity Award from the Greater Grand Rapids National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Student News

  • Third-year medical students Jasmine Mortazavi and Kyle Bivins received the 2023 NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) Young Investigator Travel Award and will attend the ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) 54th Annual Conference in Washington, DC in April 2023. This competitive and prestigious award is given to young investigators who are within 5-10 years of earning a PhD, MD, or DO degree and working in the fields of addiction research and practice who demonstrate a strong likelihood of success as an independent clinical investigator.
