A Message from Dean Marsha D. Rappley, MD

April 28, 2011

Dear College of Human Medicine Faculty, Staff, Students and Alumni,

I am pleased to announce the Division of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science in Grand Rapids, led by Eric Achtyes, M.D. as Director. Dr. Achtyes is an attending psychiatrist at Pine Rest Christian Medical Services. He brings his own research and that of his colleagues at Massachusetts General Hospital to diverse populations in Grand Rapids not often studied in psychopharmacology.

The Division will also have the support of two Associate Directors. William Sanders, D.O., Director of the psychiatry clerkship in Grand Rapids, will serve as the Division’s Associate Director for Undergraduate Medical Education. William VanEerden, M.D., senior staff psychiatrist at Pine Rest, will serve as the Division’s Associate Director for Graduate Medical Education. Both Drs. Sanders and VanEerden bring a long history of involvement in both UME and GME. Please join me in welcoming these physicians to their new roles. Our Department of Psychiatry continues to be jointly administered by the College of Human Medicine and the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Faculty may have appointments in both or either the Division or Department, as best fits career and College needs.

I would also like to announce that Animesh Sinha, M.D., Director of the Division of Dermatology, has accepted a position as the Rita M. and Ralph T. Behling, M.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. We wish Dr. Sinha and his family all the best in this positive career move.

Joining us on May 11 is Brian Nickoloff, M.D., who will be our new Division Director of Dermatology. Dr. Nickoloff is a dermatopathologist and joins us from Loyola University Medical Center where he has been Director of the Oncology Institute and Deputy Director of the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center. Dr. Nickoloff brings his renowned research in melanoma, as well as skill and experience in building a department. He has a long-standing research collaboration with Jeff Trent, Ph.D., President and Research Director of Van Andel Research Institute and President and Scientific Director of TGen, the Translational Genomics Research Institute in Phoenix, AZ.  VAI is sharing in this recruitment and providing laboratory space for Dr. Nickoloff. We are in discussions, even before Dr. Nickoloff arrives, about how we might more successfully recruit dermatologists for the greater Lansing area, where the need is great. Please join us in wishing Dr. Sinha well and welcoming Dr. Nickoloff in May.
