Nutrition

The MSU-Hurley Children's Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative's Nutrition team works with many partners to advocate for, implement, and assess pediatric nutrition interventions to improve nutrition access, education, and consumption.

MSU Extension nutrition staff members are working with Hurley Medical Center to provide nutrition education, including recipes high in iron, calcium and Vitamin C—all of which help block the absorption of lead into the body – and have held cooking demonstrations at the Flint Farmers’ Market. In addition, MSU Extension has shared these recipes through its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) education classes.

The PPHI Nutrition team's projects include:
  • Increasing community-wide breastfeeding initiatives (high priority)
  • USDA waiver for ready-to-feed formula
  • EBT expansion
  • WIC co-location in clinic
  • Nutrition education (classes/RD)
  • Nutrition prescriptions
  • Double Up Food Bucks expansion
  • Mobile food access
