  • Masako Morishita, PhD, associate professor in the Departement of Family Medicine, is heading a study to determine whether or not portable air filters can mitigate lead exposure and reduce lead levels in the blood of children who live in older houses. Robert Wahl, PhD, assistant professor in the Division of Public Health, Master of Public Health Program, is co-leading the study.
  • On November 16, the College of Human Medicine hosted the Alpha Omega Alpha Awards Induction Ceremony to honor the newest members of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society Gamma Chapter. Congratulations to the students, residents, faculty and alumni elected for their demonstrated characteristics as excellent physicians.
  • Jamila Power, MD, has been appointed Lansing Campus Community Assistant Dean. Dr. Power is an emergency medicine physician practicing at Sparrow Health System and is currently lead for the emergency medicine rotation for the college's Middle Clinical Experience.

  • Sara Urquhart has been selected as the runner-up recipient of the 2021-2022 National Medical Student of the Year Scholarship Award from the American Academy of Emergency Medicine Resident & Student Association (AAEM/RSA). The award recognizes one fourth-year emergency medicine bound medical student who demonstrates a dedication to the specialty of emergency medicine through leadership, research, and academic excellence. Sara will receive her award during the Scientific Assembly in Baltimore, MD, in April 2022.
  • Interim Dean Aron Sousa, MDanswers questions about COVID-19 booster shots recently approved by the FDA and CDC for adults 18 years and older.
  • MSU celebrated its newest University Distinguished Professors (UDP), including Sue Barman, PhD, professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Dr. Barman is the fourth MSU College of Human Medicine faculty member to receive this honor.
  • MSU has been awarded a National Institutes of Health $6.7 million grant to build a new facility to develop new imaging agents and treatments for diseases, including cancer, that afflict both humans and large animals. "The new Large Animal Facility for Imaging and Image-guided Therapies will be one of the few such medical diagnostic facilities in the world," said project leader Anna Moore, PhD, director of the Precision Health Program.
  • Xiaopeng Li, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development, has been awarded a $2M federal grant from the National Institutes of Health to study a gene therapy treatment for cystic fibrosis. Related media: Grand Rapids Business JournalSpectrum Health Newsroom.
  • Mona Hanna-Attisha, MDMPH, director of the Michigan State University and Hurley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative, was named one of Crain Detroit Business's 100 Most Influential Women in 2021.
  • Caryl Sortwell, PhD, professor in the Department of Translational Neuroscience, received the Brophy Endowment from the Edwin A. Brophy Chair in Central Nervous System Disorders.
  • Mohammed M. Alhadidy, Jared Lamp, Irving Vega, PhD, and Nicholas M. Kanaan, PhD, received Best Poster Award for Graduate Students at the Michigan SFN Chapter Annual Meeting for their poster titled “Production of SUMOylated recombinant tau in Escherichia Coli.”
  • Danielle Gartner, PhD, joined the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics as assistant professor, after completing a two-year post-doctoral position in the department.
  • The Division of Public Health is now accepting applications for the 2022 Flint Spartan Master of Public Health Scholarship.
  • Fourth-year student, Julie Ngo, was appointed by the American Academy of Family Physicians to be the student member of the Annals of Family Medicine Editorial Advisory Board.
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently awarded Anjali Garg, MD, FAAP (CHM '17), with a 2021 Critical Care Advocacy Award.
