146 physicians graduate from MSU College of Human Medicine – bringing total alumni to more than 4,000 MSU MDs

Michigan State University College of Human Medicine reached a milestone today, graduating more than 4,000 MDs from its community-based medical education program. 

The college held its 2012 commencement ceremony at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing. 

Dean Marsha D. Rappley, M.D., conferred degrees for 146 medical doctors graduating from the College of Human Medicine, raising the total alumni for the medical school to 4,052 MSU MDs.

In a special ceremony, Dean Sienko, MD, MS, Major General, United States Army Reserve and College of Human Medicine associate dean for preventive medicine and public health, conducted the Military Promotion and Oath of Office for nine graduates entering the Military Medical force.

Other highlights of the ceremony included faculty awards. Barry Saltman, MD, clinical assistant professor, Department of Family Medicine received the 2012 Humanism in Medicine Award. Lifetime Faculty Excellence in Teaching Awards were presented to Mark Loerke, MD, and Ralph Watson, MD, both associate professors in the Department of Medicine.

The Class of 2012 reunited at MSU for commencement after having spent their third- and fourth-years of medical school in hospitals and clinics at one of seven community campuses located in Lansing, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Flint, Midland Regional, Traverse City and the Upper Peninsula Region.
