Michigan State University College of Human Medicine 2009 Gala to honor Richard and Helen DeVos as Pillars of Medicine

Michigan State University College of Human Medicine will honor philanthropists Richard and Helen DeVos as “Pillars of Medicine” for their contributions to the health science community at college’s 2009 Gala, Tuesday, October 13, at the Steelcase Town Hall.


Mr. DeVos, Co-founder of Amway Corp., and his wife Helen have generously supported hospitals, colleges and universities, and other organizations and causes. Among the many institutions they have helped create in Grand Rapids are Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences, the DeVos Communications Center at Calvin College and the DeVos Campus of Grand Valley State University.

The Gala will feature Phantom of the Opera’s Franc D’Ambrosio whose special performance will honor Richard and Helen DeVos as “Pillars of Medicine” for their vision and commitment to making West Michigan a health destination.

Peter and Joan Secchia will serve as the Honorary Chairs of The Gala. Lead sponsors are Varnum and Huntington Bank. Gala proceeds will fund scholarships for first-year medical students from West Michigan;technology ranging from highly sophisticated human patient simulators to interactive distance learning technology; and research initiatives shared by MSU’s partners, including joint hires of clinical researchers with our hospital partners and collaborations on research laboratory space with partnering institutions.
